Prentice: ATV Country
Price County is ATV country, and Prentice sits right in the middle of some of the best trail systems in Wisconsin. Riders come from across the Midwest to hit these trails. And when the ride is done, they need a place to eat, drink, and share stories. The Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest provides the backdrop, with over 450 miles of groomed snowmobile trails that convert to ATV routes in warmer months, plus 100+ miles of dedicated hiking trails that cross through some of the most scenic terrain in the Upper Midwest.
What makes Price County special for ATV riders? It’s the combination of well-maintained trails, varied terrain, and genuine rider-friendly infrastructure. The county trail system connects to the broader Wisconsin ATV/UTV trail network, meaning you can ride for hours without doubling back. From rolling hardwood forests to creek crossings and scenic overlooks, the riding here has enough variety to keep things interesting for first-timers and veterans alike.
Trail Routes That End at Our Door
Ripsaw Saloon is conveniently located for riders coming off the trails. Pull up, park your machine, and walk right in. No trailer loading required. Here are some of the most popular routes that riders take to reach us:
The Prentice Loop (Approximately 25 miles)
Start in Prentice, head north on County Road E toward the Timm’s Hill area, cut east through the forest trails, and loop back south through the town of Spirit before arriving at Ripsaw Saloon. This is a solid half-day ride with mixed terrain. Some gravel roads, some forest paths, and a couple of scenic stops along the way. Timm’s Hill, Wisconsin’s highest point at 1,951 feet, offers a fire tower observation deck that’s worth the short detour.
Phillips-to-Prentice Run (Approximately 40 miles)
Riders from the Phillips area can take the trail system northeast through the Flambeau River State Forest corridor, cross into Price County, and ride straight into Prentice. It’s a longer ride through some of the most remote terrain in the region, and you’ll want to fuel up before you go. But the payoff is worth it. The route crosses multiple water crossings and runs through dense forest that feels a hundred miles from anywhere.
Kennan Connector (Approximately 15 miles)
From Kennan, riders can take the southern trail system north through rolling farmland and forest edges before connecting to the Prentice area trails. It’s a shorter ride but a good one for beginners or anyone who wants a relaxed afternoon on the trails before settling in at the bar. The terrain is forgiving and the scenery is classic Northwoods. Farmland giving way to forest, with deer and turkeys common sightings along the route.

Seasonal Riding Guide
Spring (April, May): Trails open as snow melts and ground firms up. Spring riding means fewer crowds, muddy stretches, and the satisfaction of being among the first out after winter. Call ahead or check the Price County trail conditions before you head out. Spring weather can change fast.
Summer (June, August): Peak riding season. All trails are open, the weather is warm, and every weekend brings groups of riders through Prentice. This is when Ripsaw Saloon is at its busiest, and for good reason. The combination of great riding, cold drinks, and good food is hard to beat.
Fall (September, October): The best riding of the year. Fall foliage turns the forest into a riot of color, the temperatures are perfect for riding, and the trails are in prime condition after a summer of use. This is when locals ride. And when the most experienced riders from out of town make their annual pilgrimage to Price County.
Winter (November, March): ATV trails close, but the snowmobile trails open. Same terrain, different machines, same destination. Ripsaw Saloon stays warm and welcoming through the Northwoods winter, and snowmobilers are just as welcome as ATV riders.
